About Our Site
This site on the history of Jackson County, Florida, is a segment of our larger
project, www.exploresouthernhistory.com.
Edited, published and maintained by Southern historian and writer Dale Cox, to goal
of this project is to bring wider attention to the significance of historic sites in
Jackson County and the surrounding area and to stimulate interest in both research
and preservation efforts.
Heritage tourism is developing as a major industry for many areas of the country
and Jackson County, which is intersected by major traffic routes such as Interstate
10 and U.S. 231 holds enormous potential for heritage-related visitation. It is hoped
that by bringing information on the county's interesting and significant historic sites
to a wider audience, this site can help in encouraging others to push for the
interpretation and development of Jackson County's important history. Coupled with
the county's rapidly developing eco-tourism effort, such a push could bring great
rewards to the people of the county while also preserving its past for future
generations.
