Florida: History in the Sunshine State
With its long coastline, sparkling rivers and crystal clear
springs, Florida has a history unique among all the states
of the South. Not only is Florida the home of the oldest city
in the United States, it is a state where empires battled and
its vast array of unique historic sites bear testimony to a
fascinating and significant history.
Florida boasts the largest population of any Southern state
and the distance from Pensacola to Miami is greater than
that from Pensacola to the Mississippi River. The state, in
short, is huge. Its coastline is longer than that of any other
Southern state. From pine woods and white sand beaches
of Northwest Florida, the state stretches south to the tropics
and spectacular scenery of the Florida Keys.
Historic sites range from the beautiful old Spanish cities of
St. Augustine and Pensacola to landmarks of the Seminole
Wars, Civil War battlefields, large coastal fortifications, the
birthplace of naval aviation and even harbors and rivers
associated with the pirates and privateers who once
plagued the Gulf of Mexico.
