The Colonial Heritage Center is a fascinating
museum and interpretive facility located at
Tannenbaum Historical Park in Greensboro,
North Carolina.
On part of the Guilford Courthouse battlefield
and near the entrance of Guilford Courthouse
National Military Park, the facility interprets
not only the landmark battle, but life in North
Carolina during the colonial era and time of
the American Revolution.
The ground on which the Colonial Heritage
Center stands was part of the Revolutionary
era farm of the Hoskins family. In 1781, it
was here that the troops of Lord Cornwallis
formed their lines and advanced into the
Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Please click
here to learn more about the reconstructed
farm and its role in the battle.
A tour of the center begins with a self-guided
walk through exhibits explaining life in the
area at the time of the American Revolution.
There are maps, artifacts and even a life-
sized recreation of a log cabin interior. Other
exhibits show how a water-powered mill
worked and detail other aspects of colonial
settlement in the North Carolina Piedmont.
The second part of the center features a
beautifully done scale model of the entire
Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Reproduced in
exquisite detail, the model shows the terrain,
structures and key troop positions of the
battle. Miniature soldiers battle as part of a
very nice sound and light presentation that
traces the battle from its beginning at
Hoskins Farm to its climactic moments at
nearby Guilford Courthouse.
Exhibits of weapons and artifacts relating to
the colonial era and the battle surround the
model, but perhaps the greatest historical
attraction in the center hangs on its walls.
The Colonial Heritage Center boasts a
stunning display of original maps dating from
the time of the American Revolution. Unlike
many archives, which hide such treasures
away from public eyes, the center puts its
map collection front and center.
Visitors can see Revolutionary period maps
of North Carolina, identical to the ones used
by Generals Greene and Cornwallis during
the Carolina Campaign, the Race to the Dan
and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. In
addition, a series of frames exhibits a large
scale and original map of the battle.
The center is one of the few places where
history buffs can view actual maps from the
American Revolution "up close and
personal." There is also a nice bookstore
and gift shop.
Outside the museum facility, a short paved
pathway leads to the restored Hoskins Farm
complex. This was the site of the farm and it
was on these grounds that Cornwallis not
only formed his men, but also positioned his
artillery for the opening salvos of the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse.
Interpretive panels along the self-guided
walk explain the site's significance during the
battle and provide explanations of the use of
the various structures. In addition to the
historic Hoskins House, a clapboard-faced
log cabin that dates from the early 1800s,
there is a reconstructed kitchen, a forge, a
restored historic barn and adjacent gardens.
The gardens demonstrate crops and plants
grown on the farm at the time of the American
Revolution.
The Colonial Heritage Center is located
inside Tannenbaum Historic Park at 2200
New Garden Road in Greensboro, North
Carolina. There is no cost to visit either the
museum or the grounds.
Guilford Courthouse National Military Park,
scene of the main fighting of the battle, is just
up the road at 2332 New Garden Road and
also is free to visit.
