Fifteen Amazing Gardens in One
A remarkably beautiful spot can be found on
the north side of the city of Dothan, Alabama.
Just minutes off U.S. Highway 431, the
Dothan Area Botanical Gardens may be the
finest small city botanical gardens in the
United States.
Barely ten years old, the garden complex now
features 15 specialty gardens ranging from
rose and azalea gardens to areas providing
settings for weddings and other events.
The magnificent gardens began with the
planting of the Rose Garden in 1997.
Surrounding a beautiful fountain, the Rose
Garden features 200 different rose plantings
that are maintained by the Wiregrass Rose
Society. The roses peak in May of each year
and present a stunning display when all are
in bloom.
For lovers of Southern history and heritage,
the Southern Heirloom Garden is a treasure.
Created for the preservation of seeds and
plants from the past, the garden features
unique plants such as larkspur, old rose
varieties, Confederate Jasmine and more.
Varieties were collected from across the
Southeast with many specimens coming
from family gardens, roadsides and historic
home sites.
Another favorite for Southern gardeners is the
Demonstration Garden, where the Wiregrass
Master Gardeners grow favorites such as
okra, squash, turnips, collards and corn as
well as flowers and fruit trees.
In late March, the Dothan Area Botanical
Gardens feature a stunning display of azalea
in bloom. The Azalea Garden features
numerous varieties that offer a striking array
of colors. Dothan is a city famed for its
azaleas, but this display offers some of the
finest in the area.
Other garden areas at the botanical gardens
include the Herb Garden, Butterfly Garden,
Camellia Garden, Hydrangea Garden, Shady
Garden, Fern Glade, Cottage Garden, Daylily
Garden, Succulent Garden, Wedding Garden,
Ornamental Shrub Garden and more.
The grounds also include walking paths,
boardwalks, preserved wilderness areas,
water features, statues and a variety of other
landscapes. The beautifully designed setting
is remarkable considering the brief time that
it has been under development and is a
demonstration of what can be done when
professional and amateur gardeners come
together to offer something special to their
community.
The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens are
located at 5130 Headland Highway just off
U.S. Highway 431 North in Dothan, Alabama.
The gardens are open 365 days a year.
Hours are from 7 to 7 during daylight savings
hours and from 7 to 5 during the winter.
