Reconstructed Original Stockade Fort Gibson Historic Site Fort Gibson, Oklahoma
|
The reconstructed stockade of the
original Fort Gibson is now almost 70
years old and a historic landmark in
its own right.
Local residents began a diligent effort
to save the site of Fort Gibson during
the 1920s. While it might have been
expected that the Great Depression
would hamper these efforts, instead it
helped them. The Works Progress
Administration (WPA) and Fort Gibson
Stockade Commission joined forces
in 1936 to rebuild the original log
stockade of Fort Gibson. The project
provided jobs for Oklahoma citizens
and left a durable landmark that is
enjoyed to this day.
The stockade is in remarkably good
condition. In fact, it has long outlasted
the original fort that it replicates.
The stockade provides visitors to the
site their first view of Fort Gibson.
Many of the interior rooms have been
restored and the log fort is a favorite
Oklahoma destination.
