Spanish Moss Hangs Heavy
Tallahassee is the Old South at
its modern best. Stunning
scenery, culture and warm
hospitality give this city unique
charm.
The Forgotten War
The fortifications constructed by
Confederate soldiers at Old Fort
Park still survive, preserving
Tallahassee's little known legacy
as the only Confederate capital
city east of the Mississippi never
taken by Federal troops.

Founded here because the site
marked the approximate half-way
point between the older Florida cities
of Pensacola and St. Augustine,
Tallahassee is actually the latest of a
series of important cultural capitals
that have occupied these rolling hills.
Archaeological investigations at the
Lake Jackson Mounds reveal that this
area was the ceremonial and political
center of a powerful culture long
before Spanish invaders led by
Hernando de Soto observed the first
Christmas at a site near Florida's
modern capitol building. The Spanish
later established the Mission San Luis
here as the headquarters for their
efforts to convert and settle the
province of the Native American
people who called themselves the
Apalachee.
The Creeks, Seminoles and finally
white settlers followed and the
modern city was founded. The only
Confederate capital east of the
Mississippi not taken by Union troops,
Tallahassee preserves a proud and
colorful history. It also ranks as one of
the South's most beautiful cities.
