Country 76 - Branson, Missouri
www.exploresouthernhistory.com
It began decades ago as the home of a single show and has
emerged into one of America's most beloved family showplaces.
Country 76, perhaps better known as the Branson "Strip," is the
center of activity in Branson. Bordered by miles of theaters, hotels,
restaurants, amusement parks and other attractions, Country 76 is
one of the country's favorite vacation destinations.
Country 76 got its beginning when a single group, the Presleys,
came out of the Ozarks and established a permanent show. The
group had been performing in underground mountain caves for
years. Another regionally popular group, the Baldknobbers (named
for outlaws who once frequented the "bald knobs" of the Ozarks),
was performing on a makeshift stage at the old Branson city hall.
Together, the two kicked off a country music tradition that made
Branson what 60 Minutes called the "live country music capital of the
universe."
Both the Presleys and the Baldknobbers are still part of the Branson
music scene, with theaters standing within sight of each other on
Highway 76. They are joined by dozens of other attractions, ranging
from theaters run by major stars including Andy Williams, Dick Clark
and Dolly Parton to theme restaurants and amusement parks.
Today Branson is a vaction mecca, but it all began decades ago and
grew from a single theater.
