The Branson Strip
Called the "Live Country Music Capital of the
Universe" by 60 Minutes, Branson is a family
vacation mecca in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks.
Live Entertainment in the Ozarks
One of the most amazing destinations in the
South came to life 50 years ago this year
when the Mabe Brothers opened a show in
downtown
Branson, Missouri.

Since that first show opened in 1959,
Branson has grown into what
60 Minutes
once called the "live country music capital of
the universe." There are now over 100 shows
in Branson, offering a wide variety of family-
friendly shows and entertainment.

The focal point of this explosion of activity has
long been Highway 76, perhaps better known
as "Country 76" or the Branson Strip. The
shows and venues have now spread through-
out the area, but the Branson Strip remains a
hive of activity.

The Branson Strip got cranked up when a
still-performing group, the Presleys, came
out of the Ozarks and established a
permanent show. The group had been
performing in underground mountain caves
for years. They were joined by another
regionally popular group, the Baldknobbers
(named for outlaws who once frequented the
"bald knobs" of the Ozarks), which originally
performed on a makeshift stage at the old
Branson City Hall. Together the groups
kicked off the development of an
entertainment district that is among the most
remarkable in the South.

Both the Presleys and the Baldknobbers are
still part of the Branson music scene, with
theaters standing within sight of each other
on Highway 76. They are joined by hundreds
of other attractions, including 100 theaters
run by major stars including Andy Williams,
Dick Clark and Dolly Parton, theme
restaurants, amusement parks, shopping
areas, museums and much more.
