Centerpiece of Southern History
Formed during the 1950s by the construction
of the Jim Woodruff Dam, Lake Seminole is a
37,500 acre reservoir that touches three
states.

Before it was flooded to create the reservoir,
however, this area was the confluence of the
Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers and one of
the most historic areas in the southeastern
United States.

Native American civilizations flourished here
thousands of years before the first Spanish
explorer set foot in the region. Archaeological
sites in the area include ceremonial and
burial mounds, village sites and more.

The Spanish first settled in the confluence
region in 1674 when they established the
Mission Santa Cruz de Sabacola on the point
of land formed by the fork of the two rivers.

The Spanish eventually gave way to the
British and Americans, but not before bloody
wars had been fought for the control of this
land. The lands beneath and surrounding
Lake Seminole were of strategic importance
during the War of 1812 and First Seminole
War of 1817-1818. Surviving historic sites
include forts, battlefields and Creek and
Seminole village locations.

The region became a rich agricultural district
during the years before the Civil War. Large
plantations and long forgotten communities
lined the riverbanks.
