Fort McAllister, Georgia

earthwork on the Georgia coast,
Fort McAllister was the scene of
the culminating battle of
Sherman's "March to the Sea."
Fort Smith National Historic Site
in Fort Smith, Arkansas, preserves the
remains of two historic frontier forts.
The South is home to a fascinating
collection of old forts and military
sites, some of which date back
hundreds of years.

Forts served a variety of functions
in the South and took on a variety of
forms. Some, like Fort Pickens in
Pensacola, were powerful
seacoast fortifications designed to
protect harbors from foreign attack.
Others, like Fort Smith in Arkansas,
were frontier posts the helped
tame the "Old West."
