Natural Bridge Battlefield State Park
On March 6, 1865, near the end of the Civil War,
Union and Confederate troops fought for control of a
vital crossing on the St. Marks River just south of
Tallahassee. The Battle of Natural Bridge was the
last significant Southern victory of the war and
preserved Tallahassee's status as the only
Confederate capital east of the Mississippi River not
conquered by Federal troops.

Generations of Floridians grew up hearing of how
the men and boys of Tallahassee, including the
cadets from what is now Florida State University,
marched out to fight an overwhelming force of Union
troops. The victory they achieved was a focal point of
the capital city's annual springtime celebration for
many years.

The true story of the Battle of Natural Bridge is a bit
